L A Rail.com presents: a special steam train ride behind the

All aboard the Overland Trail ... LARail.com's contribution to the 31st annual American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners (AAPRCO) convention train ... this year's event based in San Pedro, California. And what a train ... up to 26 vintage passenger cars, two Amtrak diesels and a mainline steam engine from the late 20s. Departing Sunday, September 21, 2008

The Overland Trail -- 1940s timeless beauty with streamline modern decor - featuring a stunning main salon, a quarter circle bar and the sole operating streamliner era railroad barbershop in the world!

The highlight of the convention will be an extra special private train from Los Angeles to San Diego and return on Sunday, September 21st, pulled by a historic steam locomotive ... the former AT&SF 3751 ... and you can ride this train!

AAPRCO is the American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners and is a special interest group who's mission is to promote the operation, ownership and enjoyment of the private passenger railcar. The AAPRCO convention is an annual event that takes part in exciting and exotic locations around the nation. It's a chance for members to meet, exchange ideas, enjoy their similar interests ... and show off their cars!

Here is your chance to be a part of an elite group ... travel in comfort and style aboard the most streamline moderne passenger car running today, the Overland Trail. You'll feel like you stepped back in time the moment you board this car, and with a steam engine on the front end, you'll swear you did!

Once aboard, you'll enjoy some of the better views available as the Overland Trail has incredibly large picture windows. The car also features:

  • A most gracious quarter circle bar

  • Comfortable seating

  • Smooth ride

  • Stunning interior decoration

  • Attentive and pleasant staff

  • Staff attired in traditional railroad uniforms

  • Good food and beverages

  • 3751 crew member aboard for Q & A

Breakfast and dinner are included in your fare and will be served buffet style in the lounge of the Overland Trail.

Our anticipated breakfast menu:

Southwest Frittada, Sliced and grilled chicken sausages, Belgium Waffle with fruit or maple syrup, assortment of sweet breads and more

Our anticipated dinner menu:

After an assortment of appetizers, choice of chicken or steak dinner salad with warm rosemary herd bread followed by dessert: raspberry brownie tower or vanilla ice cream drizzled with Baileys.

Our beverage menu will feature some premium soda pops as well as the standard sodas, plus juices, regular/decaf coffee, tea and more ... in fact, click here for the menu. And the best part ... since we have you as a captive audience, we thought we would charge you exorbitant "amusement park" prices. JUST KIDDING! The cost of our beverages are at 1940s prices (coffee for 15 cents!) and are really just for fun ... a chance for you to visit Willie at the quarter circle bar. So load up your coin pouch with some pocket change and be an unashamed spendthrift ... buy everyone in the car a coffee!

We may not have a dome or a "back porch", but in the humble opinion of "conductor bill", the Overland Trail will be the favorite car in the whole train! There is just no match for the onboard ambiance, gaiety and attention to detail as passengers and crew alike, mingle, interact and enjoy the "time machine" known as the Overland Trail.

We are looking forward to serving you!

    SOME QUICK FACTS:

Train departs the Amtrak 8th Street Coach Yard maintenance facility (on account of excess train length), there will be shuttle service provided between Union Station or San Pedro and the yard.

This all day adventure will depart the LA coach yard about 7:00am and arrive San Pedro (after returning LA from San Diego) at approximately 10:30pm (shuttles will return you to Union Station if not staying in San Pedro)

Breakfast and dinner is included in your fare and will be served aboard the Overland buffet style, while lunch in San Diego will be on your own.

Everyone on the AAPRCO special must be a member or the guest of a member (first level of membership is the $90.00 Associate) and there is a $25.00 per passenger "extra fare" required for everybody.

The San Diego station stop will be Old Town ... not the normal station at Broadway and Kettner. Our layover will be about 4 hours ... plenty of time to enjoy historic San Diego Old Town and lunch as well.

Our trip from Los Angeles to San Pedro is "rare mileage" through the Alameda Corridor!

We will NOT sell every seat in the car ... we want to encourage new friendships with the ability to move about the car.
